Humble Beginnings of a Frosting Rose

My first frosting rose

For my NY Resolution, I am going to be baking a wedding cake as many of you know.  I found some designs I like,  some recipes, had a cake party, and now am taking a cake decorating class.  I’m glad I did, I learned so much!

So far, I’ve learned how to make stars, shells, rosettes, and even a rose.  Not a big fan of roses, but it’s the hardest flower to make so if you can make a rose, anything is possible. For my cake, I really want to do a pastoral design with a fence, some peonies.  Now, if I could just master my nemesis … making the frosting!

The Wilton class I’m taking through Jo-Ann Fabrics (which is only $17 by the way!) contain a getting started set.  The Instruction booklet contains great information on how to bake great cakes, tons of frosting (metal) tips for my pastry bag, and a practice board.  Because I didn’t make my frosting right, the flower edged turned out broken rather than smooth (good to know), but I tell you what, no matter how many times I make frosting, SOMETHING always is wrong.

All I can do is try my best and hope the cake doesn’t look like completely screwed up.  The party will be in May, so I’ll have some time to practice, uhh, I think.  Is there anything in your life that you’ve tried to master, but for some reason it just doesn’t work?

Making Frosting

Do you keep trying? I think there’s something incredibly important about following your passions wherever they take you.  I believe it’s essential as a Mom to make time for yourself to pursue goals & dreams, no matter how small the step and no matter how silly it may seem.  I certainly try to live my life this way and will try to teach my kids this type of attitude.  I hope that their curiosity for life will be stronger than their fear of results.

Wilton Cake Teacher on the Rose

Which leads me to the book, Brain Rules for Baby: How to Raise a Smart and Happy Child from Zero to Five.  In this book, John Medina discusses the importance of praising children for their effort rather than the result. The theory is that if you praise the effort, that as they grow older, they aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty with persistence on difficult projects. If you praise the result, often times they become afraid to try something new or difficult if it is not guaranteed to have a good result.  What are you hoping to teach your kids about their goals and achieving them?

  1. Thanks so much for responding. I will keep a look out for that post. Funny this should come up because I stopped all sodas as of March 1st and I already feel better and immediatly lost 7 pounds. I cut out Starbucks as well so that's helped. I only drank diet sodas because I'm diabetic but they're just as bad.

    Thanks again!
